A Poem

My Heart...

My heart looks
My heart sees
My heart knows me.

My heart crawls
My heart wobbles
My heart walks to me.

My heart frowns
My heart cries
My heart screams at me.

My heart smiles
My heart laughs
My heart plays with me.

My heart loves
My heart calls me...
                                ... Momma.

Inspired by this quote I read in a book:
"Making the decision to have a child - it's momentous.
It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking
outside your body." ~ Elizabeth Stone

The Johnson Family Visits Sea World

Somewhat spontaneously, we decided to take a drive down to San Diego, and spend a few hours at Sea World.  We caught the Shamu Show right away, and spent the rest of the time exposing Nicky to some of the great marine wildlife at the park!  And, for the surprise ending to our day...we discovered the Sesame Street kids' play area, complete with photo opportunities with some of the kids' favorite S. Street characters.  Next trip, we're going to Sesame Street FIRST!!!

Just for Fun to Catch Up...

Well, since it's been awhile since the last entry, and not able to decide on an event or topic to share... I decided just to share a few fun/cute/etc. photos from the last couple months!

To My Mom on Mother's Day

If you know my Mom, then you know what a unique and amazing woman she is.  What you may not know, or truly realize, is how wonderful a Mother she is, and has been, to me and my brother.  There is SO much to share about my Mom...this video is only a taste of this wise, artistic, strong, loving, important influence in my own life (as a woman, a human being, and a mother)!
Love you, Mom!!!

The Little Singer

Nicky has definitely become a big fan of "Sesame Street", and especially of Elmo and his special segment "Elmo's World."  Nicky knows the theme song music to "Elmo's World" so well that he will come running from another room when he hears it.  The other day, he decided to sing along with Elmo during the opening tune.  Listen closely...............................

Our Backyard Transformation

After being in our house for nearly five years, and with the addition of Nicholas, we decided it was time to change our no plant-life/rock & concrete area...into a real "backyard", complete with flowers, bushes, trees, and GRASS!!  Many thanks to the folks at The Plant Nerd for their fabulous job!  Check out the before-and-after pictures below for the ultimate landscape makeover..................

A Very Belated Holiday Montage...very belated

Yes, it is now March.  Yes, we are barely posting about our Christmas holiday NOW!  But, hey...good things come to those who wait (at least according to Heinz Ketchup commercials).  Tardiness aside, the Johnson Family had a wonderful holiday season -- celebrating with Becky's family and extended family on Christmas Eve, having our own little family celebration Christmas morning, and then spending Christmas Day with Tom's family.  The holidays are always wonderful for us, but it makes the season THAT much better when we can share the time with the fabulous people in our lives!  On that note, enjoy Christmastime in March with Tom, Becky, and our little "saint" Nicholas...............

Nicky's 1st Birthday (A Belated Blog)

The year just FLEW by!!  It's hard to believe that our little 7 pound - 4 ounce baby boy turned ONE on December 18th!  Yes......... we're a little slow to update the journal.  But, Nicky has certainly not been slow about anything this past year.  From smiling and laughing, rolling over and crawling, getting teeth, to waving and clapping, and walking... Nicky has already grown and changed SO much!  He's quite a charmer, that is noticeable by his numerous "fans" of cousins and family friends.  His personality has definitely begun to show its true colors, with the occasional foreshadowing of "things to come".  Worried..........uh..........nah, we're not worried.  It may sound cliche, but I don't think we could've asked for a better little boy.  So, without further adieu, enjoy some (belated) birthday festivities with Nicky and some of his many "fans"!!

This Speed Racer Can't Drive 55

Ah, the hours of fun that come from a simple child's push toy.  We call it Nicky's "car"... and he's only gotten better at "driving".  Watch & smile  :-)

A Dedication to a Father, From His Pride

Many may know, and many others may learn for the first time, that in October of 2005, my Dad lost his battle with lung cancer.  He had fought well, going through the routine of biopsies, CT scans, chemotherapy, and the removal of one lung.  After the successful removal surgery, further complications manifested in the brain and shortly after in the heart.  Those complications eventually landed him in the hospital where close family were able to spend some precious time with him.  He passed 2 weeks before his 56th birthday.

After his memorial service a couple weeks later, I propositioned my already-inked brother, Jason, with the idea of he and I getting matching tattoos in memory of our Dad.  He LOVED the idea!  Now, the only obstacles were: a) choosing the right design to capture our true feelings we have for our Dad, and b) getting me (the virgin-skinned one) the nerve to actually DO it!!

Fast-forward to November 2008...

So, after 3 years, a few different design ideas and concepts, and one pregnancy (you shouldn't get a tattoo if you're "with child" or nursing), my brother and I finally found THE design.  And, with just a little foot and telephone work, a local tattoo artist agreed to take our request.  Now, without giving too much away before viewing the photos, I will give a little insight into our design selection.

Our Dad's first name is Rex.  Traditionally, the name Rex means "king".  It is common knowledge that the lion is the "king" of the jungle.  And, the lion-king's children are his cubs... his Pride.  We love you, Dad!!

P.S.  Many heartfelt thanks to our fabulous tattoo artist, Matt Wheeler!!  He does awesome work and operates out of Aces High Tattoo Shop in Fullerton, CA.  Thank you, Matt!!

Hidden Treasures: Discovered

With his increased mobility, Nicky's curiosity also increased.  Since he can now cruise around the kitchen using the cabinets for balance, he's discovering what fun and exciting treasures lay within those cabinets!  On one such treasure hunt, Nicky discovered............ Tupperware!!!  Enjoy some footage of his adventures with the Tupperware cabinet below!

Happy Halloween!

Our first family Halloween, and the days leading up to it, yielded some fun and memorable moments.  We took Nicky to a local pumpkin patch for the requisite photo shoot among the squash and hay.  It was SO busy...there was SO much stuff to grab Nicky's attention that we didn't stay too long, but just long enough to get a few cute pictures.
We had put out a few Halloween decorations around the house, but had to be pretty selective of what to put out and where.  Nicky grew attached to a little stuffed pumpkin that belonged with a stuffed teddy bear.  He was constantly carrying the little pumpkin around in his mouth by the fabric strap... he looked pretty silly crawling and cruising around with the little pumpkin in his mouth!

On Halloween night, the we hung out with Tom's brother, Jerry, and his family while they went trick-or-treating.  Before hitting the streets, we stopped by Grandma & Grandpa Johnson's for some family pictures.
Tom and I liked the idea of dressing up in costumes that made sense with Nicky's costume.  The costume we bought for him I'm sure was meant to be a "dinosaur".  But, being the fantasy-lovers that we are, we decided to call it a "dragon" costume instead!!  So, with that... I found myself a princess costume and Tom wore his fancy Renaissance Faire attire.
The final product:
Momma became the "damsel in distress/princess"
Daddy became the "brave rescuer/Prince Charming"
Nicky became the "ferocious dragon" (aka Drago-saurus Rex)
